# Best Strategy Board Games for Large Groups We've all been there: 7 people at the table, serious gamers, and someone suggests "how about Codenames?". No. You want crunch. You want strategy. You want to burn some brain cells. Most "strategy" games cap out at 4 players. But there is a rare breed of heavy games that thrive at 6, 7, 8, or even 9 players. --- ## 1. Sidereal Confluence (4-9 players) **Complexity:** High (3.7/5) **Time:** 2 Hours This is the holy grail of large-group strategy. It is an asymmetric trading game where 9 different alien races are trying to run an economy. **Why it works:** - **Real-time trading:** There are no turns during the trade phase. Everyone is shouting deals at once. "I'll give you 3 blue cubes for a colony ship!". - **Positive Sum:** Deals help *both* parties. Being mean doesn't work; being the best dealmaker does. - **Engagement:** You are never waiting. You are always negotiating. --- ## 2. Captain Sonar (6-8 players) **Complexity:** Medium (2.5/5) **Time:** 45-60 Minutes Imagine Battleship, but real-time, team-based, and stressful. Two teams sit on opposite sides of a long table blocked by a screen. You are the crew of a nuclear sub. **The Roles:** - **Captain:** Calls the course. - **Radio Operator:** Listens to the enemy Captain to deduce their position on a transparent map. (The hardest and coolest job). - **First Mate:** Charges weapons systems. - **Engineer:** Manages the inevitable breakdowns. This isn't a party game. It requires tight communication and genuine tactical thinking. --- ## 3. 7 Wonders (3-7 players) **Complexity:** Medium-Light (2.3/5) **Time:** 30-40 Minutes The classic civ-building drafting game. **Why it scales:** - **Local Interaction:** You only trade and fight with your immediate neighbours. - **Simultaneous Turns:** Everyone picks a card at the same time. A 7-player game of 7 Wonders takes exactly the same amount of time as a 3-player game. It's the most reliable strategy filler in existence. --- ## 4. Citadels (2-8 players) **Complexity:** Medium (2.1/5) **Time:** 45-60 Minutes A game of city building and hidden roles. Each round, players draft a role card (Assassin, Thief, Magician, King, etc.). **The Strategy:** - The gameplay is in the mind-games. "I think Dave picked the Merchant because he needs gold... so I'll be the Assassin and call Merchant." - With 8 players, it can be slow, but the tension of the draft keeps it interesting. --- ## Honorable Mentions - **Eclipse (2nd Dawn):** Epically long 4X space game. Technically plays up to 6, maybe more with expansions, but be prepared for a 6-hour game. - **Formula D:** Racing game that plays up to 10. It's lighter, but managing gear shifts and pit stops gives it a strategic edge.
